Remember my vow to throw my black, post-baby “I’m fatter than I’ve ever been” shrouds away dress like the rockstar I’ve always tried to convince people that I am?
Well that’s easier said than done, right? I feel like it has been so long since I’ve tried to buy clothes with any other criteria than “it must fit and make me look less fat,” that I don’t even remember how!
How DO I want to dress? I asked myself.
And then I remembered:
GLAM, GLAM, GLAM, and fairly comfy. I mean, I am a mom.
But how do you go about finding fashion inspiration? My friend Nichelle was over and we started discussing this. It was so much fun, I felt like I was in high school again. She told me she picks a fashion icon and then tries to find pieces they wear that she likes. Her style icons are mostly hip-hop artists, haha like M.I.A. and Rhianna.
I decided I find my style inspiration mostly from movies and TV shows. Like I did from Roller Boogie! Or I tend to get obsessed with one item, like right now it’s circle-shaped sun glasses, and then I just kind of go from there.
But I really liked Nichelle’s method of finding style inspiration, and I recently found a music video that I’m so obsessed with I could watch it over and over again. The song is the CLASSIXX’S “ALL YOU’RE WAITING FOR.” I love the song, and I know about them because they are friends of friends. I’m not hip, but my friends are. Also they are on a movie soundtrack that my husband did.
Things are going well for the band, and they just made a music video directed by Urban Outfitters. It’s so painfully hip I almost hate myself for liking it so much. But I don’t care! I LOVE what Nancy Whang (the guest vocalist) is wearing in it, and I’ve decided it’s exactly how I want to dress, all of the time.
And I think it’s totally reasonable.
Check out the video and some screenshots I’ve pulled to illustrate just how I was inspired.
LOTS of awesome circle shades, black and white and animal print. I’ve never been able to say no to animal print. And can we talk about her jumpsuit? It’s basically just a glorified version of my momiform. I’m so ON-TRACK!
What is this? A robe?! A kimono? It’s glam loungewear is what it is. And look at that pony print! I need more items of clothing that look like someone should be fanning me with a palm frond. I’m serious.
There are some REALLY good uses of chiffon going on here. And again, the aforementioned black and white and animal print.
And these NAILS?! I love them. Also I’m going to use more live animals as acessories. HA. Ok, I’m kidding about that one.
How amazing is that stylist, setting up this shot with that dress like she is a mermaid. Genius. And I love the hats. You might think I’m joking, I’m being dead serious about all of this.
Ok, those last two are just for kicks. That little speedo dance cameo is fantastic.
I’ll try to make a round-up of items inspired by this video, but in the meantime, I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!
How do you find your style inspiration? Or are you too busy reading Nietzsche and trying to justify the meaning of your existence? I did that once, it was super depressing. Bring on the sequins!
