Obsessed: Advanced Style

A little while ago my friend Brittany wrote about Iris Apfel on her blog. I had seen pictures of the well-dressed, older, fashion icon (pictured above) but I didn’t know her name. After learning more about her, I’ve became OBSESSED with her. I scoured the Internet looking for round sunglasses that mimic her signature specs. I finally bought these.

Then I stumbled upon the blog Advanced Style (which is also a documentary and a book, obviously I’m late to the party) and I’m like head-over-heels in love. I’m SO EXCITED TO GET OLDER! No, seriously.

I think the reason these older fashion plates are really resonating with me right now is because pregnancy and post-pregnancy body image issues have been really getting me down. I seriously don’t care to be the thinnest girl in the room. I never have been. But it’s hard not to feel like a freak or a failure when I’m surrounded by women who gained half as much weight as I did when pregnant, and then seem to lose it in weeks.

Reality check, if this is one of my biggest problems after having a baby I know I’m very blessed. But Provo (and Instagram) is CRAWLING with young moms, and it’s hard not to get sucked into the comparison game.

But back to the old ladies. Look how AWESOME they are. They are old in a world where everyone is dying to be young. And they don’t seem to give a damn. They’re piling on the accessoires and busting out the red lipstick and I love it. I’ve always been a LOUD dresser. I’ve been picking out my own ensembles since I was 4. I wore red pants in high school when no girl would be caught DEAD in them and we all remember the Great Jumpsuit Experiment.

But age and body-image have started backing me into an “all black” and “only wear what’s flattering” corner. But not anymore! I’m wearing whatever I want from here on out. And I can’t wait. Even if I’m up 30, cough 40, cough, maybe even 50 lbs! Yeah that’s right. I don’t plan on staying that way, but I’m gonna party on my way down.

Here are some images from Advanced Style that are getting me really excited about my extravagant dressing renaissance.

  2. “party on my way down” – I LOVE THAT. Alison, you’ve got such a fun, positive energy that I fully support & appreciate. I need more of that, so I’m going to try to be like you and party no matter what anyone thinks 😉

You’re going to make a FABULOUS old lady!

  5. RIGHT?!?! I don’t know why people dress so boring! There’s so much more to life than caring about what other people think and the older I get, the more I think “who friggin cares?!?!” Let’s have fun with it all! I love that there are outrageous women out there who take that. Mind you, it’s easier to do it in NYC when no one cares versus PRovo where people would gawk, but again, who cares?! let’s do this! let’s have fun with it!

ps–those glasses are onlye $16?!?! nice find!

    1. EXACTLY! And thanks! I almost dropped a whole lot more on another pair that wasn’t as cute! I want the red ones too!

    1. HA! Perfect!!

  7. OH my gosh. These are ridiculously awesome. I have a bunch of friends who are SO worried about getting wrinkles, losing their baby weight, getting a boob job, etc… and I’m just so excited for when I can be a grandma and just embrace it all. I think getting old is the most beautiful thing in the world.

  8. Awww I’m 8 and a half months pregnant with number four, so I totally understand! Stay positive (although it’s always easier said than done!). 🙂

You need to know that I have kinda sort of required my 14 year old daughter to start following your blog, instagram, and pinterest.

we love stalking you on all fronts of social media!

You are a wonderful example of everything I want her, and myself :), to celebrate about being a woman. Your authenticity is refreshing and marvelous. We replayed your instagram video “frame dance” probably 100 times, loving every second of it!
THANK YOU, you really are awesome!!!

I just want to say, “Amen to that sista above! (Sarah)” I think anyone and everyone should look up to you. You’re a true woman, who’s head is in the right spot. You’re the most down to earth girl I know and your energy and positivity is contagious. You are a breathe of fresh air alison! Though I don’t have kids yet, I know what you mean with Provo. It’s almost scary how “perfect” everyone down there is becoming. Glad I got out, but sad to have left you! Keep your chin up and do your thang because no girl compares to you! Now, go on with your bad self.

      1. Girl! Cut it out! I’m feeling so much love! And I’m sad we lost you in Provo! Haha read my newest post about all the fabulous talent here! You were included in that, but the hot moms are at another level! Love you and thank you.

    Virgin commenter here…

I love this! I just had a baby 3 months ago, too, and I am LARGE. Way larger than I want to be. I have a lot of weight to lose, but I realized the other day that I don’t have to WAIT to be happy. I can be happy now, with who I am, or whatever! Duh. So anyway, just know you’re not alone! I’m the other young mom who doesn’t lose weight right away after having a baby. 🙂 haha!

  11. Have I ever told you that I adore you and I want to be best friends? Probably not because that would be creepy. THE POINT IS, no one, and I mean no one, talks about the post partum body and all of those feelings in a real and meaningful way. I so so so appreciate this post and thank you for being real and I’m off to find some big round glasses and to look in the mirror and thank my body for making my beautiful baby.

7 months post-partum here and I look like I swallowed fifteen baby whales. You, my darling, could be any weight you want and make it look simply amazing. Your confidence is inspiring. But I get it–sometimes(always) staying in is so much easier than trying to find clothes that don’t make me feel horrible. A friend of mine posted her flat stomach on Facebook three weeks after she had a baby and I wanted to kill her. I swore Facebook off for a month after that.

P.S. I’m moving back to Utah in a couple of weeks. Lunch?

  15. Advanced Style has inspired me to start my own blog, where I try to change perceptions about ageing with inspiring stories and bold fashion productions. Our latest fashion production featuring models over 55 might interest you – http://thedigitalage.net/a-splash-of-summer-chic/
