I’ve always been kind of snotty about photographers who want to shoot in all film. Haha, like a reverse elitism. Because I tend to think film is kind of elitest. I know, a lot of hoity-toity going on here.
But I mean, I got that film has this amazing quality and is old school and we should “preserve the art” and blah blah blah, but my reasoning was always “why use film just so you can make the pictures digital so I can put them online?” It just seemed like the photographer equivalent of being a hipster and going vegan (remember I WAS vegan so you can’t hate me for saying that…) There’s a lot of good reasons to do both, be vegan or shoot exclusively in all film, but it’s a pretty extreme choice.
But as usual, I was being a boob. Because in October I had the pleasure of having our family photos taken by the talented Diana Palmer of Yan Photography, who now shoots in all film! Diana has taken our pictures before, right after Gigi was born and before we had any kiddos, but it was digitally.
So why have our pictures taken on film if I’m so prejudice against it? You might ask. Because she was mentoring the awesome Rebecca Siewart, and we were the models. READ: IT WAS FREE! Haha, so I said, “YES YES PLEASE!” Because if Diana Palmer asks to take your picture, film or not, you NEVER say no.
And now I must admit, I totally get it. That whole FILM hype.
Hearing that camera sound took me back to high school, you know, when we had cameras that made that click/flash/winding sound. I really loved that in order to capture a moment you sincerely had to “capture” the moment, because film is expensive and you can’t just click click click away staging shots. It made the whole experience feel more intimate and sincere. And I really loved it.
Of course the pictures are pretty rad too. But the experience of having our precious moments captured on film, that was the real treat for me. In fact a couple of times while I was waiting for Diana to get the shot ready, and I was gazing in Rad’s eyes, I started welling up with tears because it was just so sweet and magical and because I’m a total nut job.
Either way…here you go! First the light in our bedroom was just so pretty, and Rad looked like an angel in his little white onesie, so mama and baby boy had a little love fest.
She was supposed to crop me out of this! Haha.
He slays me. I’m beyond obsessed.
After our little duo sesh we had to try to cheer up big sis, who was feeling a bit left out. Haha. Lil lady.
Hop through to see the rest!
Is it ok to use this as our Holiday card photo even though I have so much cleave?
Diana is a CHILD WHISPERER! I have never caught Gigi’s real smile before, like, not once. She took Gigi into my office without the family, Gigi was in a total MOOD, and she pulled these smiles out of her. I still can’t believe it.
Also, how cute is her sweater from Neve / Hawk? I love it.
My favorite print in our bedroom!
And I really love nursing and I was totally ok with her snapping a few pix while I cheered Mr. Rad up. I love the bond that is created when I nurse and I’m happy to have it on film.
That’s like my most favorite shot of Eric and me. We never take photos together anymore! Ha.
These next few photos are from Rebecca Siewart, she was shadowing Yan for the day, learning the art of film and she did amazing!
I feel SO so spoiled to have gotten to work with such talented ladies. And I’m so grateful for these perfect memories.
Thanks for indulging me and letting me share! I love you all!
