I had EVERY intention of taking these to the neighbors as a Valentine’s treat. But Heather was over, and after we tasted one, we had to taste another. And then the kids saw that the mommies were enjoying something they weren’t, and then it was all over.
I saw Liz’s idea for heart-shaped soft pretzels with pink sea salt on her fantastic site Say Yes to Hoboken, and I couldn’t get the thought out of my head! Her recipe looks AMAZING, and it looks easy to do because you don’t have to let the dough raise! So you should totally check it out!
But I like things complicated and sweet, and I wanted a recipe that had the dough rise beforehand. (Which is probably why my hearts look all squashed and hers look all perfect!)
So I searched around on the ol’ Internet, and read lots of reviews and then decided on this Buttery Soft Pretzels Recipe from Allrecipes. It has you dip the raised dough in a baking soda/ hot water mixture. Apparently this is what gives the pretzels the most perfect, crunchy, AMAZING crust, with the softest, perfectly baked center.
After they baked, I brushed the warm pretzels with melted, salted butter, and sprinkled a lot of cinnamon on sugar on top. And holy HELL people. I’m not kidding. They tasted good later, but like a donut served fresh from the oven: it was a religious experience.
So even though Valentine’s day is over, I suggest you try these or Liz’s recipe ASAP. Who knew soft pretzels were so easy to make?! Did you guys know and not tell me? Do you have another recipe I should try?
