Halloween Sugar Cookies

Halloween Sugar Cookies
October 29, 2012 Alison Faulkner

As you know, I LOVE making sugar cookies. I have some old stand-bys when it comes to making my cookies, but I’m always trying to perfect my craft. I’ve been super excited to try the recipes in this new book that I bought: Decorating Cookies by Bridget Edwards. And I finally got the chance!

Overall I really like her royal icing recipe, it uses meringue powder, and though I usually like to use egg whites (as I show in my video here) when I’m making cookies to take to lots of people I feel better using meringue powder just to be safe. When I’m using egg whites from our chickens I don’t worry, but we don’t get as many eggs in the winter. The icing doesn’t taste as good as my usual recipe (it’s in the video), but I think next time I’ll add some lemon juice and give it the zing that I like. The consistency, however, is AMAZING. Absolutely picture perfect.

I tried the Almond Sugar Cookie recipe and it was good, but not as soft as my usual cookie. This could be due to elevation, but I will probably use my old cookie recipe with the new icing recipe in the future. I will share my recipe with you soon!

I think sometimes it can be hard to envision the end result of a sugar cookie when you look at the cookie cutter, so I thought I’d show what the cookie cutters looked like in case you were curious. I bought this set last year at Joann, but it’s here too.

Also! I had the hardest time coming up with good saying for my tombstones! I finally found some good slightly funny ones online, and then saw some around the neighborhood (in yards) and these are what I came up with. I think you want decorative tombstone phrases to be fun and slightly twisted but not full-on grotesque, right?

All in all I love making sugar cookies so much and I don’t like eating them so it works out nicely.

Plus I have the cutest baking assistant ever. She might not be super helpful but she’s really good at raw cookie dough.

I hope you have a very spooky Halloween! I think I seriously might make one more batch of cookies…I have a problem. But if you want to see other ones I’ve done, here are some: Edible Gem Necklace Cookies, Christmas Cookies, and I still need to do a post on Gigi’s Pony cookies! And what I realized when I went to list all of my cookies is that I hardly ever get finished pictures of them on the blog (yet another reason you should follow me on instagram) but I’m seriously going to rectify this ASAP.

I love your guts.
Alison

That picture of Ginger is worth the price of admission. Plus 100 million dollars.

Between that face Ginger is making and the deliciousness of the cookies… let’s just say I wish I was at your house right now. So cute!
